Stem alternations and stem distributions

چکیده
The analysis of stem alternations (e.g. sang as past of sing) is controversial; there is a lasting tension between morphophonological theories (sang is derived from sing by rule) and stem storage theories (sang and sing are stored allomorphs). This paper argues that in many cases of stem alternation (e.g., Spanish diphthongization) the locality conditions on contextual allomorphy provide crucial evidence for deciding between these views, and crucial evidence for a morphophonological theory in particular. However, the argument is only that some alternations must be treated morphophonologically; it is based only on one subtype of alternation. Another (“morpheme-morpheme”) type of alternation, one that applies only to certain morphemes, and which is triggered only by a particular morpheme (or morphemes), appears to take place under the same locality conditions that are obeyed by contextual allomorphy. In morpheme-morpheme alternations, distributional arguments based on locality conditions might not be able to decide between storage and morphophonology. At the same time, it can be shown that the two theories make different predictions about how such alternations are represented in the minds of speakers. This leads to a potentially unified theory, in which the boundaries between theoretical and experimental approaches are effectively eliminated.

Stem alternations and multiple exponence
In a canonical inflectional paradigm, inflectional affixes mark distinctions in morphosyntactic value, while the lexical stem remains invariant. But stems are known to alternate too, constituting a system of inflectional marking operating according to parameters which typically differ from those of the affixal system, and so represent a distinct object of inquiry. Cross-linguistically, we still...
متن کاملContextual conditions on stem alternations Illustrations from the Spanish conjugation*
This paper looks at the analysis of stem alternations: a type of non-affixal morphological change. Alternations of this type are controversial because they look in principle like they can be analyzed either with distinct stem forms in memory, or with (morpho)phonological rules that derive alternants from a single underlying form. I argue that the locality conditions on contextual allomorphy pro...
متن کاملParadigm leveling in non-standard Russian: consonant alternations in comparatives and nouns
This paper analyzes a paradigm leveling process currently taking place in Russian that affects consonant alternations. In standard Russian, these alternations are present in some verb forms (ljubit’ ‘to love’ – ljublju ‘I love’), in comparatives (suxoj ‘dry’ / suxo ‘dryly’ – suše ‘drier, more dryly’) and before certain derivational suffixes (noga ‘leg’ – nožka ‘small leg, furniture leg’). Howev...
متن کاملSomali and the Nature of Morphophonological Alternations
Somali is an East Cushitic language spoken in the Horn of Africa, with determiner morphemes whose initial consonants undergo interesting phonological alternations when suffixed onto noun stems. This could be described as a type of “derived environment contact phenomena,” as the changes in these suffix-initial consonants are totally dependent on the final segment of the stem and are not active i...
متن کاملThe Interaction of Language-Specific and Universal Factors During the Acquisition of Morphophonemic Alternations With Exceptions
Using the artificial language paradigm, we studied the acquisition of morphophonemic alternations with exceptions by 160 German adult learners. We tested the acquisition of two types of alternations in two regularity conditions while additionally varying length of training. In the first alternation, a vowel harmony, backness of the stem vowel determines backness of the suffix. This process is g...
